Yukiko Stranger-Galey

Yukiko's story SACHIKO'S NAME was the winner of the I Am Writing Picture Books competition 2024, judged by Little Tiger Books.

Yukiko writes stories that celebrate the wonder and diversity of our world. She is inspired by her mixed Japanese-English background, and loves to tell stories where she can share some of her cultural experiences. Her writings also draw from her work as a natural history museum curator and she particularly delights in engaging readers with the unusual and overlooked stories of the natural world.

She was a 2022 The Word For Diversity Editor-Writer Mentorship Finalist, judged by Random House Books for Young Readers, and was selected for the 2022 WriteMentor Summer Mentorship Program. As a museum curator, Yukiko’s exhibitions have been recognized with multiple awards for their innovation, storytelling and sustainability, and she is the recipient of the Governor General of Canada’s Award for Excellence in Museums: History Alive.

After calling London, Edinburgh, Chicago and Vancouver home, she is currently settled in Cornwall, UK with her husband, three children and hundreds of books. Yukiko is represented by Joyce Sweeney of The Seymour Agency.

What was the inspiration behind your winning story.

SACHIKO”S NAME is about my middle child. Children obviously develop at different rates and reach certain milestones at different times, but watching her struggle with doing some things that came sooner to others was, at times, heart-breaking. But it was also inspiring. She taught me that she didn’t need to do things the same way as everyone else and that she could forge her own path. In the main character Sachiko, I have tried to capture my daughter’s strength of character and confidence in her own self, and I hope that others will admire her – as I do.

How did you celebrate winning?

My three kids, my husband and I made ice-cream sundaes for supper that night!

What has happened since you won the competition?

I had the most wonderful zoom conversation with the editors from Little Tiger! They offered me advice and comments on my writing, the topics SACHIKO’S NAME addresses and the market in general. After describing some of my other stories, they requested further manuscripts for them to review. Although none of them were quite the right fit in the end, they kindly gave me more valuable feedback on these which I am currently using to revise my stories and make them even better!

Do you have any tips for anyone thinking about entering a writing competition?

I would say – enter, enter, enter! Even if you think your story isn’t quite ready, or you don’t have the time to give it that last polish that you wanted to, you never know exactly what the judges are looking for so why not try? It can be hard to put your work forward for others to read, but the experience of sending out a story and the confidence it builds in your own work are things that I have found to be invaluable. Also, the separation that sending it out brings can sometimes trigger the best ideas and story edits (that you can incorporate for the next submission opportunity!)

I am fortunate to be part of a couple of really great critique groups, and we often let each other know about opportunities like this competition. It’s nice to work towards something together, we can critique each other’s entries and support each other through the whole submission and waiting period! It can really help continue to build that community that can be so important to writing.

I have a busy life with three young kids and a full-time job, so sometimes (actually, most of the time) it is very hard to carve out the time to write. Entering a competition often focuses me by providing a deadline – and I find that is sometimes what I need as a way to give myself permission to take time away from my other commitments and write. The act of entering should be celebrated, and I try to recognise that for myself and others.

What is next for you?

Well, I am of course keeping an eye out for more competitions to focus and inspire me! I am also working hard on editing and shaping the stories that I have, reflecting some of the feedback that Little Tiger shared with me. I am continuing to send stories out into the world, and one day I hope to have that magical story that finds a publishing home!
