Allison Secker is a domestic thriller writer from central Scotland. She grew up reading Enid Blyton and has been writing stories since primary school. Allison was a Friday Night Live finalist at the York Festival of Writing in 2022 where she read out her novel opening. In 2024, Allison won the I Am in Print Crime / Thriller competition.
What was the inspiration behind your winning story?
My novel was inspired by the idea that sometimes it’s the people closest to us that are keeping the biggest secrets. The plot is centred around a teenage twin girl who goes missing. Two people are keeping her secret. Five neighbours are holding something back. How many lies before somebody cracks?
How did you celebrate winning?
I found out on the train on my way into work. So my commute was filled with texting lots of my friends and family.
What has happened since you won the competition?
I am now represented by Diana Beaumont at DHH Literary. She was the judge of the Crime / Thriller category!
Do you have any tips for anyone thinking about entering a writing competition?
Definitely go for it. There’s nothing to lose and you never know what might happen. For me, it was good having a deadline to work towards. I made sure my opening was as polished as it could be and created questions about what happens next.
What is next for you?
I am currently working on some edits and very excited about what the future might hold.
